Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals develop self-compassion and manage feelings of shame or self-criticism. It blends elements of cognitive therapy with concepts from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience and mindfulness to promote emotional healing.
CFT works by activating the soothing system in the brain through compassion-based practices. Clients learn to understand the origins of their inner critic, recognise unhelpful patterns and develop a kinder, more supportive inner voice. This process encourages emotional balance and psychological resilience.
CFT is particularly helpful for people struggling with low self-esteem, shame, depression, anxiety or trauma. It can also support those who find it difficult to feel kindness towards themselves. The approach is suitable for adults, teenagers and sometimes used in group settings.
In a CFT session, clients may engage in guided imagery, breathing exercises and reflective discussions. The therapist helps them explore emotional difficulties and encourages compassionate thinking. Sessions focus on building emotional safety, self-understanding and the ability to respond to distress with care.
