Alcoholism
Alcoholism is an addiction to consuming alcohol which often needs specialist and individualised support to enable people to recover.
Alcoholism, or alcohol use disorder, is a chronic condition characterised by an inability to control drinking despite negative consequences to one’s health, relationships, and responsibilities. It can begin for many different reasons which are unique to the individual.
People living with alcoholism often experience a loss of control over their drinking, leading to a cycle of dependence, guilt, and continued use despite harmful consequences. Feelings of shame, isolation, and denial are common, as is the use of alcohol to cope with stress, trauma, or emotional pain.
You may struggle with strained relationships, financial or legal problems, and declining physical and mental health. Over time, the disorder can deeply affect all areas of your life, making recovery feel overwhelming without support.
