ARFID
ARFID is an eating disorder and mental health issue that can impact individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
ARFID is an eating disorder characterised by an extreme avoidance of certain foods or an overall lack of interest in eating, leading to nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, or failure to grow properly (in children).
Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not related to body image concerns. Instead, avoidance may be due to sensory issues (e.g. texture, smell, appearance of food) fear of choking, vomiting, or other negative experiences, lack of interest in food or eating in general, emotional distress, shifts in mood or behaviour, and challenges with daily functioning.
People with ARFID may have a very limited range of acceptable foods and often experience significant anxiety around mealtimes. The condition can affect physical health, emotional well-being, and social functioning. Treatment usually involves a multidisciplinary approach, including therapy (often CBT), nutritional support, and sometimes medication.
