Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders
Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders affect an individual's ability regulate their sleep-wake cycle.
Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorder is a condition where a person's internal body clock, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle, is out of sync with the natural day-night schedule or societal expectations. This misalignment can lead to difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up at desired times, despite having the opportunity for rest.
People with this disorder may commonly experience extreme sleepiness during the day, trouble concentrating, and frustration at not being able to sleep when needed. They might struggle with irregular sleep patterns, often sleeping well at "wrong" times (like during the day or late at night), and may feel misunderstood or pressured to conform to conventional schedules.
This disorder can significantly impact daily functioning, making it hard to maintain work, school, or social commitments. It may lead to emotional distress, reduced performance, and strained relationships, especially when others don't recognise it as a genuine medical condition.
