Cyclothymic Disorder
Cyclothymic Disorder is a mental health condition that can impact individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Cyclothymic Disorder is a mood disorder characterised by chronic, fluctuating mood swings that include periods of mild depression and hypomania, which are less severe than the full episodes seen in bipolar I or II disorder. These mood shifts persist for at least two years (one year in children and adolescents) and can significantly affect emotional stability.
People with cyclothymic disorder may experience unpredictable highs and lows, feeling overly energetic and talkative during hypomanic phases, followed by periods of low mood, fatigue, or self-doubt. Although the symptoms are not extreme enough to meet criteria for major depression or full mania, the emotional ups and downs can still be disruptive and confusing.
This disorder can impact relationships, work, and daily routines, especially when mood changes are frequent or misunderstood. It may lead to difficulties in maintaining consistency, and if left untreated, cyclothymic disorder can increase the risk of developing more severe bipolar conditions over time.
