Dance and Movement Therapy
Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that uses movement and dance to support emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing. It recognises that the body and mind are deeply connected, and that movement can express thoughts and feelings that words sometimes cannot.
DMT works by encouraging individuals to explore and express themselves through bodily movement. Therapists observe and mirror movements to build connection and understanding. This non-verbal communication helps uncover emotions, release tension, and foster self-awareness, resilience, and integration of mind and body.
DMT is for people of all ages and backgrounds, including those with mental health issues, trauma, developmental conditions, or physical illness. It benefits individuals who may struggle to express themselves verbally or who feel more at ease communicating through movement.
In a session, the therapist may lead warm-up exercises, followed by improvised or structured movement activities. Clients are encouraged to move freely, reflect on their experiences, and explore emotions through dance. Sessions are supportive, creative, and tailored to each person’s therapeutic goals.
