Delirium
Delirium is a serious and sudden mental health issue that can severely impact individuals. It requires personalised treatment and support which can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Delirium is a serious and sudden disturbance in mental abilities that results in confused thinking, reduced awareness of the environment, and difficulty focusing, typically caused by an underlying medical condition, medication, infection, or substance use. It develops quickly, often over hours or days, and is considered a medical emergency.
People experiencing delirium may have trouble staying alert, become disoriented in time and place, experience hallucinations or paranoia, and exhibit rapid mood swings or agitation. Their memory and understanding can fluctuate throughout the day, and they may have trouble recognising familiar people or surroundings.
Delirium can significantly impact a person’s safety and ability to function, particularly in older adults or those already experiencing illness. It may lead to prolonged hospital stays, increased risk of falls or injury, and long-term cognitive decline if not treated promptly, though it is often reversible once the underlying cause is addressed.
