Depersonalisation and Depersonalisation Disorder
Depersonalisation and Depersonalisation Disorder is a mental health issue that can impact individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Depersonalisation Disorder, also known as Depersonalisation/Derealisation Disorder, is a dissociative condition where a person persistently or repeatedly feels disconnected from their own thoughts, body, or surroundings, as though they are observing themselves from outside or living in a dream. These experiences are distressing and are not caused by substances or another medical condition.
People with this disorder commonly report feeling emotionally numb, like a "robot," or describe their body or voice as unfamiliar. They may feel detached from their environment (derealisation), experience time distortion, or struggle to feel fully present, often accompanied by anxiety or confusion about what is real.
Depersonalisation can significantly impact daily life, making it hard to concentrate, engage emotionally, or feel grounded in reality. It may affect relationships, work, and self-identity, and while episodes can be temporary or chronic, many people find them frightening and isolating without proper understanding or support.
