Emetophobia
Emetophobia is a distressing phobia and mental health concern that may require therapeutic support.
Emetophobia is an intense, irrational fear of vomiting, seeing others vomit, or feeling nauseous. It’s classified as a specific phobia and can cause severe anxiety, avoidance behaviours, and distress that interferes with everyday life and wellbeing.
People with emetophobia may avoid certain foods, social situations, public transport, or people who appear unwell. They often engage in compulsive behaviours like excessive handwashing or checking expiry dates to reduce the perceived risk of vomiting or illness.
Emetophobia can significantly limit social life, eating habits, and daily routines. It may lead to malnutrition, isolation, or co-occurring anxiety disorders. Professional support, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), can help individuals gradually reduce fear and regain control over their lives.
