Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is a form of cognitive-behavioural therapy designed to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It helps people confront fears and resist compulsive behaviours, gradually reducing anxiety and breaking the cycle of obsessive thinking and avoidance.
ERP works by gradually exposing individuals to feared thoughts, images, or situations while helping them resist the urge to perform compulsions. This repeated exposure helps retrain the brain, showing that feared outcomes are unlikely, and anxiety can decrease without performing rituals.
ERP is primarily used to treat OCD, but it can also help with other anxiety-related disorders, such as phobias and health anxiety. It is well suited to individuals ready to face their fears and engage in structured, evidence-based therapeutic work.
In an ERP session, the therapist and client work together to develop a hierarchy of fears. Starting with manageable challenges, the client is exposed to triggers without engaging in compulsions. Sessions are supportive and focused on building confidence and long-term coping skills.
