Hypersomnolence
Hypersomnolence is a sleep disorder that can significantly impact mental health. Understanding and addressing it through a multidisciplinary approach which includes therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Hypersomnolence, or hypersomnia, is a sleep disorder marked by excessive daytime sleepiness despite adequate nighttime rest. Causes may include neurological conditions, head trauma, sleep apnea, depression, or use of certain medications. It may also be idiopathic, with no identifiable cause.
People with hypersomnolence often struggle to stay awake during the day, nap frequently without feeling refreshed, and wake up feeling groggy or disoriented. They may experience brain fog, memory issues, and difficulty concentrating, even after sleeping more than the typical amount.
Hypersomnolence can interfere with daily functioning, reducing work performance, social interaction, and overall well-being. It may lead to accidents or strained relationships. Treatment options include behavioural strategies, lifestyle changes, and medications like stimulants or wake-promoting agents, depending on the underlying cause.
