Jealousy Delusion (Othello Syndrome)
Jealousy Delusion (Othello Syndrome) is a mental health issue that can impact individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Othello Syndrome, also known as delusional jealousy, is a psychiatric condition where a person holds an unfounded belief that their partner is unfaithful. Causes may include underlying psychotic disorders, brain injuries, substance abuse, or neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.
Individuals with Othello Syndrome frequently check their partner’s behaviour, seek reassurance, or accuse them without evidence. They may obsessively monitor communications, misinterpret innocent actions as signs of cheating, and experience intense emotional distress, suspicion, or even paranoia toward their partner.
Othello Syndrome can severely damage relationships and lead to emotional or physical abuse. It may cause isolation, depression, and legal issues. Treatment typically involves antipsychotic medication, therapy to address delusional thinking, and sometimes couples therapy to manage relational stress and rebuild trust.
