Kleptomania
Kleptomania is a mental health issue that can impact individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Kleptomania is a rare impulse control disorder where individuals feel a strong urge to steal items they don’t need or can afford. Causes may include imbalances in brain chemicals like serotonin or dopamine, trauma, or co-occurring mental health conditions.
People with kleptomania often feel tension before stealing and relief or gratification afterward. The stolen items are usually of little value and not kept for use. Feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety commonly follow, but the cycle may repeat uncontrollably.
Kleptomania can lead to legal trouble, damaged relationships, and emotional distress. Many hide the behaviour out of embarrassment. Treatment may involve cognitive-behavioural therapy, impulse control techniques, and medications like antidepressants or mood stabilisers to address underlying causes and reduce urges.
