LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy
LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy is a therapeutic approach that actively supports and validates the identities and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. It aims to create a safe, inclusive space where clients can explore issues without fear of judgement, discrimination, or misunderstanding.
This therapy works by integrating an understanding of gender, sexuality, and societal pressures into the therapeutic process. Therapists challenge heteronormative assumptions, address internalised stigma, and support identity development. The focus is on empowerment, acceptance, and fostering resilience in the face of discrimination.
It is for anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+, including those questioning their identity or facing related challenges. It also supports people dealing with mental health concerns influenced by marginalisation, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma rooted in social or familial rejection.
In a session, clients are encouraged to talk openly about their identity, relationships, and experiences. Therapists listen with sensitivity and affirmation, providing support tailored to the client’s needs. The space prioritises acceptance, emotional safety, and exploration of personal and social identity.
