Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centred, goal-oriented counselling approach that helps individuals resolve ambivalence and strengthen motivation for change. It supports people in making positive life choices by exploring their values, goals, and reasons for wanting to change.
MI works through collaborative conversation, where the therapist uses open questions, reflective listening, and affirmations. Rather than directing or advising, the therapist helps clients find their own motivation, building confidence and autonomy while gently guiding them towards meaningful behavioural change.
Motivational Interviewing is helpful for anyone struggling with change, especially in areas like substance use, health behaviours, or mental health. It is suitable for people who feel uncertain, stuck, or conflicted, and who benefit from a non-judgemental, empowering approach.
In a session, the therapist engages the client in open, respectful dialogue about their goals and concerns. The focus is on evoking the client’s own reasons for change, strengthening commitment, and planning achievable steps, all while fostering a supportive and compassionate relationship.
