Music Therapy
Music therapy is a clinical, evidence-based practice that uses music to support emotional, cognitive, and physical wellbeing. It involves creating, listening to, or moving to music, guided by a trained therapist, to achieve therapeutic goals tailored to each individual.
Music therapy works by engaging the brain and body through rhythm, melody, and expression. Music can access emotions and memories, reduce stress, and improve communication. Therapists use musical activities to help clients process feelings, develop skills, or connect with others non-verbally.
Music therapy is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, including those with mental health conditions, learning disabilities, dementia, or physical illness. It can also support individuals experiencing trauma, grief, or developmental challenges, regardless of musical background or experience.
A session may include playing instruments, singing, songwriting, or simply listening to music. The therapist responds to the client’s needs and encourages expression through sound. Sessions are adapted to suit personal goals, whether emotional release, relaxation, communication, or social interaction.
