Narrative Therapy
Narrative therapy is a collaborative approach to counselling that views people as separate from their problems. It focuses on the stories individuals tell about their lives, aiming to rewrite these narratives in empowering ways that reflect their values, strengths and hopes.
Narrative therapy works by exploring how dominant stories shape a person's identity and behaviour. The therapist helps clients uncover alternative stories that highlight resilience and possibility. This process encourages a shift in perspective, allowing individuals to reclaim agency and create positive change.
Narrative therapy is suitable for anyone experiencing emotional distress, identity issues, or the effects of trauma, discrimination or marginalisation. It is especially helpful for those who feel stuck in negative patterns or defined by problems, rather than their full potential and experiences.
In a session, the therapist invites clients to share their personal stories and examine how they have been shaped by relationships, culture and experience. Together, they re-author these stories, focusing on values, intentions and moments of strength that support healing and transformation.
