Neurosis (historical term)
Neurosis (historical term) is a old mental health term that used to refer to different mental health conditions.
Neurosis is an old term once used to describe mental distress that doesn’t involve losing touch with reality. It included issues like anxiety, phobias, obsessions, or emotional instability, often rooted in unresolved internal conflicts or early life experiences.
People described as neurotic often struggled with excessive worry, self-doubt, low mood, or compulsive behaviours. These patterns could interfere with work, relationships, or self-esteem but didn’t typically affect someone’s grasp on reality like psychosis might.
Though the term’s no longer used in modern diagnoses, the emotional struggles it referred to are still very real. Therapy helps by unpacking the root of these feelings, teaching coping skills, and supporting long-term emotional balance and self-awareness.
