Pica
Pica is a mental health concern that requires professional, individualised therapeutic support.
Pica is an eating disorder where someone regularly eats non-food items like dirt, paper, soap, or chalk. These cravings go beyond curiosity and continue for at least a month, often without a nutritional reason.
People with pica may feel drawn to certain textures or tastes that aren’t meant to be eaten. This can lead to health risks like digestive issues, poisoning, or blockages. Others might feel confused, ashamed, or hide the behaviour.
Pica can impact physical health, self-esteem, and daily life. Therapy can help by exploring emotional or sensory triggers, offering healthier coping strategies, and addressing any underlying stress, trauma, or nutritional concerns linked to the behaviour.
