Polyvagal Therapy
Polyvagal therapy is based on the Polyvagal Theory, which explores how the nervous system responds to stress and safety. It focuses on the vagus nerve and how bodily states affect emotions, behaviours, and relationships, especially in the context of trauma and regulation.
Polyvagal therapy works by helping individuals recognise and shift their autonomic states. Through breathwork, movement, voice, and safe social connection, it encourages regulation of the nervous system. The goal is to move from states of survival or shutdown into feelings of safety and engagement.
This therapy is helpful for people experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, or chronic stress. It is also beneficial for those with nervous system dysregulation, including individuals with PTSD or developmental trauma. Anyone looking to feel more grounded and connected can benefit from it.
A session may include breathing techniques, gentle movement, sound, or exercises that activate calming neural pathways. The therapist helps the client notice internal shifts and build awareness of nervous system states. Sessions aim to create safety, resilience, and greater emotional balance through the body.
