Pyromania
Pyromania is a rare but serious mental health issue that can put individuals at risk of harm and legal consequences. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can support individuals to manage the disorder.
Pyromania is a rare impulse control disorder where an individual feels a compulsive urge to deliberately set fires. Unlike arson, which may be driven by financial or political motives, pyromania is about the psychological gratification derived from the act of starting fires and watching them burn.
People with pyromania often feel intense tension or emotional buildup before setting a fire, followed by a sense of relief or pleasure afterward. Many may also experience fascination with fire-related objects or events, frequently watching fires or engaging in behaviours like false alarms or fire station visits.
Pyromania can cause significant harm, legal consequences, property damage, and personal distress. Relationships may suffer due to secrecy or risk-taking behaviour. Therapy, especially cognitive-behavioural approaches, can help individuals understand their triggers, develop coping strategies, and address underlying emotional or psychological issues contributing to their compulsions.
