Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)
Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioural therapy that focuses on identifying and changing irrational beliefs. It helps people understand how thoughts influence emotions and behaviours, aiming to replace unhelpful thinking with healthier, more realistic perspectives.
REBT works by teaching individuals to recognise irrational beliefs, challenge them, and replace them with rational alternatives. The ABC model is central: an Activating event leads to Beliefs, which then cause emotional and behavioural Consequences. Therapy helps restructure beliefs to improve wellbeing.
REBT is helpful for people struggling with anxiety, anger, depression, low self-esteem, and stress. It suits those willing to actively examine their thinking patterns and make changes. It is especially useful for individuals who want practical tools to manage emotional challenges.
During a session, the therapist and client identify problematic beliefs and examine their impact. Clients are encouraged to question these beliefs, practise new ways of thinking, and apply strategies in daily life. Homework and exercises are often used to reinforce learning.
