Relationship OCD (ROCD)
Relationship OCD (ROCD) is a mental health issue that can impact individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Relationship OCD is a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder where individuals experience persistent doubts and intrusive thoughts about their romantic relationships. These obsessions often revolve around their partner's suitability, the "rightness" of the relationship, or whether they truly love their partner.
People with Relationship OCD may constantly question their feelings, overanalyse their partner’s flaws, or seek reassurance from others. They might compare their relationship to others or obsess over past relationships. These thoughts can feel distressing and are often accompanied by compulsive behaviours to ease anxiety.
Relationship OCD can lead to significant stress, emotional exhaustion, and strain within the relationship. It may cause avoidance, guilt, or frequent conflict. Therapy, particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), helps individuals manage intrusive thoughts, reduce compulsive behaviours, and build healthier emotional responses.
