Specific Phobia
Individuals may experience a Specific Phobia related to pretty much anything. It is a mental health issue that can impact individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Specific Phobia is an anxiety disorder characterised by an intense, irrational fear of a particular object, situation, or activity. Common examples include fear of heights, spiders, flying, or needles. The fear is out of proportion to the actual threat posed.
People with specific phobias may experience panic, rapid heartbeat, sweating, or dizziness when faced with their fear. They often go to great lengths to avoid the feared object or situation, which can cause embarrassment, inconvenience, or interference with normal routines and responsibilities.
Specific phobias can significantly limit a person’s lifestyle, choices, and wellbeing. Avoidance may lead to missed opportunities or increased stress. Therapy, particularly exposure therapy and cognitive-behavioural approaches, helps individuals gradually face their fears, reduce anxiety, and build confidence in handling triggering situations.
