Trauma and Trauma-Related Disorders
Trauma and Trauma-Related Disorders significantly impact the mental health of individuals in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Trauma refers to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience, such as abuse, violence, or serious accidents. Trauma-related disorders, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), occur when the psychological effects of trauma persist, disrupting a person’s thoughts, emotions, and daily life.
People with trauma-related disorders may experience flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, or emotional numbness. They often avoid reminders of the trauma and may feel on edge, easily startled, or disconnected from others. Feelings of shame, guilt, or helplessness are also commonly reported.
Trauma can affect relationships, self-esteem, and the ability to feel safe. It may lead to depression, substance use, or chronic health issues. Therapy, including trauma-focused cognitive-behavioural therapy and EMDR, helps individuals process traumatic memories, reduce distress, and rebuild a sense of control and stability.
