Trauma-Focused Therapy
Trauma-focused therapy is a specialised approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. It addresses the emotional, psychological and physical impact of trauma, aiming to reduce symptoms like flashbacks, anxiety and fear while restoring a sense of safety and control.
This therapy works by helping clients safely explore traumatic memories, develop coping strategies and reframe unhelpful beliefs. Techniques may include grounding exercises, cognitive restructuring or narrative work. The goal is to integrate the trauma into one’s life story without overwhelming emotional distress.
Trauma-focused therapy is suitable for individuals who have experienced any form of trauma, including abuse, violence, accidents or loss. It can support both adults and children, and is especially helpful for those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression or emotional numbing.
In a session, the therapist creates a safe and supportive environment. Clients may talk about their experiences, learn grounding techniques and gradually process memories. The pace is carefully managed to prevent re-traumatisation, with the therapist offering reassurance and tools for emotional regulation throughout.
