Xenophobia
Xenophobia is a mental health issue that can impact individuals and the lives of those around them in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to improved well-being and quality of life.
Xenophobia is the fear or hatred of people perceived as foreign or different, often based on nationality, ethnicity, or cultural background. It can manifest as prejudice, discrimination, or hostility, and may be influenced by societal attitudes, misinformation, or personal experiences.
People with xenophobic views may feel threatened by cultural differences, resist diversity, or express discomfort around individuals from other backgrounds. This can lead to stereotyping, exclusion, or verbal and physical aggression. Xenophobia may also stem from fear of change, economic insecurity, or past trauma.
Xenophobia can harm both individuals and communities, fuelling division, violence, and social isolation. It may also cause guilt or internal conflict in those who recognise their biases. Therapy can support understanding of underlying fears, promote empathy, and encourage healthier, more inclusive beliefs and behaviours.
