Z-drug Dependence
Z-drug Dependence is an addiction which can impact mental health issue in different ways. Understanding and addressing it through therapy can lead to recovery, improved well-being and quality of life.
Z-drug dependence refers to the physical or psychological reliance on non-benzodiazepine sleep medications such as zopiclone, zaleplon, or zolpidem. These medications are commonly prescribed for insomnia but can lead to tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, and misuse with prolonged or inappropriate use.
People with z-drug dependence may find they need higher doses over time to achieve the same effect. They might struggle to sleep without the medication, experience cravings, or feel anxious and irritable when attempting to reduce or stop use. Memory problems may also occur.
Dependence can affect mental clarity, mood, and sleep quality, often leading to disrupted daily routines and emotional distress. Therapy, particularly cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), can help individuals address sleep issues, gradually reduce reliance on medication, and develop healthier long-term sleep habits.
